The Boy from the Bush brought down the roof at the Juicy Rump last Friday giving an exclusive free performance to a crowd of over 300.

In Alice Springs to celebrate the 40th Birthday of local radio station 8HA, Ian Moss wowed the crowd for over an hour as he belted out hits including Never Before, Bow River, Tuckers Daughter and Telephone Booth.

Moss was born and raised in Alice Springs and started playing guitar in local teenage bands including ‘The Scene’ and ‘Anger & Tears’ which debuted when they played at Alice Springs High School in 1970. After failing one of his high school years he moved to Adelaide with the intention to repeat in the city. Fate intervened when he answered an advertisement for a guitarist in a shop window in 1973, joining the band that was to become a legend in Australia – Cold Chisel.

After Moss joined organist and principal songwriter Don Walker and drummer Steve Prestwich, the group took shape with singer Jimmy Barnes and eventually bass player Phil Small, starting the hard grind of playing gigs on the back of flatbed trucks and in suburban hotels. Barnes remembered young Mossy as “a boy from the bush who didn’t wear shoes but played fantastic”.

Local musician and rising star Gareth J Dawkins played for three hours post Ian Mosses performance. Like Moss, Dawkins was raised in Alice Springs and is a singer song writer who plays the guitar. Dawkins released his debut album ‘Songs from the Hideout’ in 2009 and is currently writing songs for his new album.

Dawkins says “I was elated to be asked to play after Mossy, he’s an amazing guitarist and songwriter, it was surreal speaking to him and I couldn’t believe that he asked for one of my CDs”.

Gareth J Dawkins is performing at the Lasseters Cup Ball on Saturday 30th April at The Outback Quarry.
